A largely motionless coach Marco Rose stood on the sidelines as RB Leipzig delivered another disappointing performance in the Bundesliga. The Saxons' offensively dismal 0-0 draw at FC Augsburg, who remained unbeaten for the sixth time in a row, was by no means a recommendation for the next Champions League spot at the start of the 22nd matchday.
VfB Stuttgart could knock Leipzig out of fourth place with a home win against Wolfsburg on Saturday. Rose's team played soccer that had little to do with the Red Bull DNA of pace, energy and pressing.
The visitors were even lucky in the end when Augsburg's Frank Onyeka fired the ball past the Leipzig goal from 13 meters in a central position (82'). And then they were unlucky when substitute Kosta Nedeljkovic headed against the crossbar in stoppage time. FCA earned their 28th point of the season with some decent work.
Short spells of pressure from Leipzig
In possession, the fourth-placed team lacked footballing ideas and moments of surprise. The visitors, led by the less creative Xavi Simons, did not create any major chances. There was nothing to see from striker Benjamin Sesko. Loïs Openda sat on the bench for just over an hour until he replaced the ineffective Christoph Baumgartner as an additional striker. However, the joker did not score either.
Defender Lutsharel Geertruida shot dangerously from distance once in the first half (11th minute). International David Raum tested FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen (28'). But Rose's team only built up real pressure in a few mini-phases after the half-time break.
Dahmen reacted well to a shot from former international Lukas Klostermann, who deputized for the suspended Willi Orban in defence (47'). And Simons narrowly missed the Augsburg goal from 18 meters (49'). There was no sign of the will to force the important away win.
Augsburg claim a penalty
And Augsburg? They were compact defensively in front of 28,260 spectators and were even determined in attack from time to time. On one occasion, they vehemently demanded a penalty, but in vain, when Leipzig's Ridle Baku was hit on the upper arm in a duel with Marius Wolf (25').
Alexis Claude-Maurice forced Leipzig's experienced goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi into a save in the 39th minute with a treacherous chip. In the second half, Kristijan Jakic, who was very present in midfield, had a chance with a header, but Gulacsi was at his post again (73rd).
