The Bundesliga handball players of Thüringer HC lived up to their role as favorites in the first game of the new year with some difficulty. The team of Head Coach Herbert Müller defeated BSV Sachsen Zwickau 31:26 (17:15). The best scorer for the Thuringians, who won for the fifth time in a row, was Johanna Reichert with eleven goals. Former THC player Arwen Gorb scored seven times for coach Norman Rentsch's side. After their fourth defeat in a row, Zwickau slipped to penultimate place.
The Thuringians got off to a slow start in front of 1,384 spectators. It was not until the sixth minute that Reichert scored the first goal for the favorites. After that, both sides became less nervous. For THC, Reichert shone at the back and Nathalie Hendrikse on the right wing. However, Zwickau, who were much improved compared to the 20:27 home defeat against Buxtehude, were able to keep up the high tempo for large stretches of the first half (13:13/23) before the home side pulled away.
5:0 run decides the game
Zwickau started the second half with a much better grip and went 19:18 in front through Gorb in the 36th minute. However, the visitors then made more technical mistakes and rushed shots, enabling the club from Thuringia to pull 23:19 (42') ahead with a 5:0 run. Zwickau braced itself against the threat of defeat, but was no longer able to turn the game around.
