She won Olympic bronze in Rio de Janeiro and was one of Germany's top gymnasts. Sophie Scheder ends her career at the age of 27. Her body was no longer playing ball.

Olympic bronze medalist Sophie Scheder has ended her gymnastics career. The 27-year-old announced this on Wednesday via Instagram. The uneven bars specialist, who trained at the national base in Chemnitz for many years, has been plagued by bad luck with injuries recently, with her knee in particular causing problems. Scheder wants to stay in gymnastics.

"I've often fought my way back after setbacks, but now I've realized that it's better to listen to my body. I've had a wonderful career and am especially proud of my success in Rio de Janeiro," Scheder was quoted as saying in a statement from the German Gymnastics Federation.

The Wolfsburg native won bronze on the uneven bars in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. A year earlier, Scheder had won silver on the uneven bars and with the team at the European Championships. "I've achieved everything I've ever wanted. I am incredibly grateful for this time that I was able to experience and for the support I have received," said Scheder.
