After the attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg, FC Bayern decided to forgo its planned ceremony in the stadium. "We had completely different ideas about me standing here," said CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen after Munich's 5-1 win over RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. The reason for the change in plans was the "horrific" attack in Magdeburg.
"That's why we decided to cancel our Christmas ceremony at very short notice," said Dreesen. The 75,000 spectators in the stadium applauded the decision. "This ceremony should be a joyful one, it just doesn't fit this moment," said Dreesen. He asked the spectators to rise from their seats and remember the victims and their families.
A car had driven into a group of people at the Christmas market in the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt in the early evening. According to official figures, at least two people were killed and more than 50 were injured.
