Kevin Kampl misses RB Leipzig for son's school enrollment

Rutine midfielder Kevin Kampl will miss the second test match of RB Leipzig's US trip - and for a special reason. Kampl is already flying back on Thursday instead of to Miami to celebrate the school enrollment of his six-year-old son Jordi on Saturday. "It's once in a lifetime and it's an important thing. I should be there," said Kampl, as reported by "Kicker" and "Bild".

The family also come from the Slovenian homeland. "I've already missed the last two birthdays, Jordi has in May, we're always on the road. It's been discussed with the coach for a while," said Kampf, who will therefore be missing Sunday's game against Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In New York, Kampl also met up with his old Leipzig colleague and friend Emil Forsberg, who moved to New York at the start of the year. "He tried to make it palatable for me here. But I'm doing well in Leipzig, I'm very happy there. I'm not thinking about anything else," said Kampl (33).

Kampl's new role

Kampl is entering his eighth season with the Saxon Bundesliga club, but lost his regular place there in the second half of last season. "Coming to terms with the situation when you've been used to being a regular throughout your career wasn't easy for me. I'll be honest about that," he said looking back.

Coach Marco Rose (48) also explained his new role as a challenger to him in a few conversations. "You have to remember that you're getting older. I've accepted the role," he said and added: "I won't settle for anything. If I had, I wouldn't have extended my contract, I would have done something else."
