Five years after the burglary of the Green Vault in Dresden, the police have drawn a positive balance: most of the stolen jewelry has been returned, the perpetrators convicted and the damage repaired.

Five years after the spectacular burglary in the Green Vault in Dresden, the police have drawn a positive conclusion to the investigation. The glass is more than half full, said Olaf Richter, head of the special commission Epaulette. They are quite satisfied. "When has it ever happened before that defendants in such a case have even admitted that perpetrators of art thefts have given something back?"

In fact, five years after the crime, most of the jewelry has been returned to the treasury. Five perpetrators have been convicted and four of them are in custody. The destruction caused by their brutal actions on the premises has been repaired. The Dresden State Art Collections now have their own security department. A civil lawsuit for damages is currently underway, which is blocking the restoration of the damaged jewels from the 17th and 18th centuries.

It remains to be seen whether all the treasures will ultimately be returned to Dresden. "There is hope, but there are currently no clues as to the whereabouts of the missing jewelry," emphasized Richter. Occasionally, tips are received, including from abroad. "We hope that one day there will be someone who can lead us further."
