They already exist in neighboring federal states, and now the Saxon skilled trades sector is also calling for a bonus for student internships.

The skilled crafts sector in Saxony is campaigning for the introduction of a bonus for vacation internships. This proposal is part of a list of demands to a new Saxon government that the plenary assembly of the Chemnitz Chamber of Skilled Crafts has adopted. The bonus, as well as mandatory careers guidance in schools, should help to attract more trainees to skilled trades professions. There are currently more apprenticeship vacancies in Saxony than interested parties.

In neighboring federal states, the state already pays a bonus for student internships. In Saxony-Anhalt, 120 euros are paid per week of internship. This was initially paid for internships in the skilled trades; in the summer, the bonus was extended to agriculture and forestry. An internship bonus of 120 euros per week was also paid in Thuringia this year.

The list of demands also includes other measures to help strengthen the skilled trades sector. "There are plenty of problems and challenges," explained Chamber President Frank Wagner. The tradespeople are pushing for a reduction in bureaucracy, want to see all economic issues bundled in one ministry and reject further staff increases in the state - with the exception of teachers and police officers.
