It is Saxony's smallest castle and belongs to the Chemnitz art collections. The new permanent exhibition in the museum there draws attention to a celebrity - with significance for the present day.

The first section of the new permanent exhibition at Rabenstein Castle, which will run until 2026, is dedicated to the life and work of a pioneer of sustainability. According to the announcement, Hans Carl von Carlowitz (1654-1714) played a central role in the over 800-year history of Saxony's smallest castle in the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz network.

Documents and material evidence, a film and an interactively designed dialog table will invite visitors to engage with the highly active man from 1 May.

Writing on the principle of sustainability in 1713

The later chief mining administrator is one of the most important representatives of the von Carlowitz family, who had owned the castle since 1619. As such, he experienced the environmental destruction caused by the mining industry in the Ore Mountains. In 1713, he published "Sylvicultura oeconomica", in which he formulated the principle of sustainability - a development approach that still has an impact today.

Rabenstein Castle is located on the western outskirts of Chemnitz. Dating back to the 12th century, the complex has been repeatedly extended and modified. One of its special features is the unique painting in Germany of the historic dining room in the palace with a cycle of animals and mythical creatures from around 1625. The work of an unknown artist was commissioned by the Saxon noble family.
