Ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel opens the accompanying program of the upcoming exhibition at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden. The CDU politician will read from her memoirs "Freedom" on June 23. Merkel's invitation was prompted by the links between the content of her book and the theme of the exhibition "Freedom. An Unfinished Story", which can be seen from June 20 to May 31, 2026. Prior to this, a book signing with Merkel is planned in a major bookshop in the city on the Elbe.
The exhibition, which is funded by the German government, is being created in cooperation with the European Solidarity Center, the Polish National Museum and the Czech National Gallery.
The show sheds light on the idea of freedom as well as different ideas and experiences of freedom. According to the announcement, six chapters show the strategies and actions used by political movements in Poland, the Czech Republic and the GDR to peacefully liberate themselves from the authoritarian socialist systems in their countries. It looks back to the revolutions of the 18th century, but also to the debates of the present day.
Angela Merkel looks back in her memoirs "Freiheit. Memories 1954 - 2021", she looks back on her life over 736 pages. Co-author is her long-time confidante Beate Baumann.
