1.83 million Deutschmarks exchanged in Saxony and Thuringia

People are still finding Deutschmarks when clearing out, moving house or after the death of relatives. In Saxony and Thuringia, a total of 1.828 million Deutschmarks were exchanged for euros this year up to the end of November, according to the Bundesbank. In return, people received around 935,000 euros at the Bundesbank branches in Chemnitz, Leipzig and Erfurt. In the same period last year, just under 1.4 million Deutschmarks were exchanged.

There are still billions of Deutschmarks in circulation throughout Germany: According to the Deutsche Bundesbank, the value of cash not yet exchanged amounted to just under 12.2 billion marks (around 6.24 billion euros). The central bank assumes that some of this is also outside Germany.

Consumers can exchange D-Mark bills and coins free of charge for an unlimited period of time at all 31 branches of the Deutsche Bundesbank or by post via the Bundesbank branch in Mainz. The exchange rate remains unchanged: You can get one euro for 1.95583 Deutschmarks.
