FC Hansa Rostock defeated Dynamo Dresden in a third division match accompanied by rioting. The Mecklenburg club came out on top 1:0 (1:0) in front of 26,000 spectators in the explosive East German clash. Nils Fröling scored the decisive goal in the eleventh minute. It was Hansa's first home win against Dresden in 14 years. Dynamo missed out on temporarily taking over at the top of the table.
Clashes with police
The match was interrupted for 28 minutes from the half-time whistle due to rioting in the stands. The reason for this was an unauthorized banner unfurled by Dynamo fans, whereupon the police intervened. The contents of the banner were initially unknown.
When the poster was removed, there were clashes with the police. Dresden supporters responded to the action by throwing fireworks in the direction of the police. The situation also escalated on the pitch, with players and officials briefly clashing. The situation later calmed down again.
Dynamo only in the game after 25 minutes
Hansa got off to a lively start after the hefty 5-0 loss in Mannheim. The hosts barely gave the second-placed team any time to breathe for 20 minutes, pressing high and running after every ball. Dynamo were initially unable to find their feet, which became apparent when they conceded the goal. Fröling was able to head a long cross into the center unhindered between two Dresden defenders to take the lead.
It took 25 minutes before Dresden got into the game. After 30 minutes, Tony Menzel had the visitors' first chance. Hansa began to manage the game and were now much less active in attack than in the first half hour.
After the long half-time break, Dresden pressed for the equalizer. Menzel alone (60th/76th) missed twice in promising positions. A shot by substitute Robin Meißner (884') missed the Hansa goal by centimetres. The home side now defended with great sacrifice, cleverly closing down the space time and again, but also tried to decide the game with counter-attacks. The match was contested and open until the final whistle.
