RB Leipzig fell behind as Bayern chasers and gave TSG 1899 Hoffenheim a promising debut for head coach Christian Ilzer. The Saxons lost 3:4 (2:1) to the Kraichgauers in a lively and entertaining matchday 11 game - in which they had led three times. Marco Rose suffered his fourth winless competitive game in a row in the duel between the two Austrian coaches.
RB Leipzig miss out on the lead three times
Captain Willi Orban (15th minute) and Antonio Nusa (19th) scored the goals for the RB team ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash at Inter Milan. TSG defender Stanley Nsoki (67) also scored an own goal. Adam Hlozek (17'), Tom Bischof (50') and Hlozek again (82') equalized before joker Jacob Bruun Larsen (87') made it 4:3.
Leipzig are already eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich. After four defeats in the top flight so far, they are now hoping for their first taste of success at international level.
In front of 28,023 spectators, Ilzer, who joined from Austrian double winners Sturm Graz, sat on the bench for the first time - his team impressed for long stretches.
TSG with new momentum in attack
Five days after the first training session with Ilzer, Hoffenheim started full of attacking spirit and enthusiasm. Pellegrino Matarazzo's successor fielded four strikers. After a fine pass from Tom Bischof and a feed from Marius Bülter, Haris Tabakovic immediately missed a great chance to take the lead (4th).
But then the visitors pressed the pace. A cross from Nusa allowed Orban to sneak past Stanley Nsoki and put the ball over the line to make it 1:0. That was the start of four furious minutes.
Wild minutes with three goals
The equalizer by Hlozek, who outpaced Orban, brought a broad smile to Ilzer's face. But he quickly froze again: Nusa slammed the ball into the net after a pass from Loïs Openda to make it 2:1 for Leipzig. National keeper Oliver Baumann had no chance.
TSG talent Bischof shines with free-kick goal
The injury-plagued Leipzig side - without Xavi Simons, Yussuf Poulsen, Xaver Schlager and David Raum, among others - then got off to a bitter start in the second half. The 19-year-old Bischof curled a free-kick from the edge of the box past goalkeeper Peter Gulasci with his left foot to equalize again.
However, Leipzig were not deterred by this. However, they were lucky that Nsoki deflected the ball into his own goal to take the lead again - the preparatory work once again coming from Nusa. But RB failed to get off to a good start in the final eight-match run of fixtures of the year: ex-Leverkusen man Hlozek equalized from 19 metres and Bruun Larsen was even celebrated for TSG's 4-3 win.
