Zsolt Löw will definitely only be available to Bundesliga club RB Leipzig as interim coach until the end of the season. The 45-year-old Hungarian confirmed this at his presentation ahead of the DFB Cup semi-final at VfB Stuttgart on Wednesday (20:45/ZDF and Sky). "It was important to me to establish from the outset that I would only help out here for seven weeks and then resume my work at Red Bull. Then a new coach will take over," said Löw.
He sees it as a challenge to save RB Leipzig's goals for the season by returning to the Champions League and winning the cup. "The fact that big names like Jürgen Klopp, Oliver Mintzlaff, Marcel Schäfer and Mario Gomez trust me with this task and believe in me is a great honor," said Löw, who was approached on Saturday evening after the Saxons' 1-0 loss at Borussia Mönchengladbach and did not need much time to think about it.
Löw's advantage: experience in RB football
As he knows the RB cosmos and Leipzig well. Until 2018, he worked as an assistant coach at the RB clubs in Liefering, Salzburg and Leipzig. "I still know a lot of people here, players and employees. It's like coming home for me," said Löw. He does not want to guarantee that his mission will be crowned with success: "We can't do magic."
Löw worked together with Thomas Tuchel at FC Bayern Munich until 2024. Since the end of January, he has been the chief strategist alongside Jürgen Klopp for Red Bull's soccer clubs.
