1. FC Magdeburg went into the international break with a heavy setback. The Blue & Whites lost 3-0 (0-2) against Hamburger SV in front of 27,270 spectators on Friday evening. In a one-sided game, Ransford Königsdörffer (9th, 53rd) and Marcus Mathisen (15th, own goal) scored for HSV, with FCM playing a major part in all the goals conceded. Magdeburg remain fourth in the table for the time being.
"It was a game that we decided against us," said FCM coach Christian Titz. We brought our opponents into the game through our own mistakes. We struggled in defense and in attack. It wasn't as if we didn't have any chances. You need your own form against an opponent like that, and some players didn't have it today," emphasized the coach.
The FCM coach was once again forced to make changes in defence: Marcus Mathisen and Jean Hugonet returned, but Daniel Heber was suspended with a yellow card. Samuel Loric replaced the injured Lubambo Musonda on the wing. The two best attacking players in the league immediately looked to get forward in the direct duel, with HSV tending to switch quickly. Königsdörffer had the first chance of the game after a corner hit the crossbar of the FCM goal (5').
Hamburg double strike puts FCM on the back foot
A few seconds later, Hamburg did better: Ludovit Reis stole the ball from Silas Gnaka and the ball came to Königsdörffer at the second attempt, who put the visitors in front. After Magdeburg's Atik was rightly denied a penalty, HSV counter-attacked and FCM defender Mathisen was unlucky to push the ball over the line. The visitors now naturally had the upper hand, Magdeburg searched in vain for a way back into the game, only creating half-chances up to the break - Hamburg were closer to a third goal than FCM were to the first.
"The first two chances were two goals. And then HSV just played it grown up," said FCM attacker Martijn Kaars and summed up: "It wasn't a good game from us."
The hosts made three changes at the break, including Patric Pfeiffer replacing Mathisen. However, little changed on the pitch, Magdeburg tried a few things but were too imprecise and HSV countered time and time again. However, the goal came when FCM gave Königsdörffer far too much space and allowed him to dribble into the box - Reimann had no chance.
Magdeburg lack ideas
The visitors switched back a little after that, but Magdeburg still hardly had any opportunities. Substitute Hercher first got stuck in defense (56') and then failed to find a teammate with his cross (56'). Although the FCM ran on unconditionally in the final minutes, they were unable to score despite all their efforts. During the international break, Titz & Co will have a number of areas to work on, particularly in defense. The FCM will then continue their campaign in Hanover.
