The harpsichordist and pianist Andreas Staier has been honored with the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig. The award was presented on Friday as part of the Bach Festival in the ballroom of the Old Town Hall, according to the Bach Archive. Staier has been one of the best-known Bach interpreters for almost four decades.
"He enriches audiences with his unique creative vision and extraordinary talent," said Leipzig's First Mayor Torsten Bonew (CDU) at the award ceremony. His works are an inspiring source of beauty and expression.
The Bach Medal made of Meissen porcelain has been awarded since 2003. It honors singers, musicians, conductors and musicologists who have rendered outstanding services to the cultivation of Bach's works.
