The signing of Max Eberl as FC Bayern Munich's new sporting director is drawing closer. According to media reports on Tuesday, the record German soccer champions have agreed a transfer fee with Eberl's last employer, RB Leipzig. Eberl, who played for Gladbach for many years and most recently worked for Leipzig as manager, has long been FC Bayern's preferred candidate.
According to "Bild", Munich will pay RB Leipzig 3.5 million euros. According to the report, an agreed transfer fee for the RB release of their then coach Julian Nagelsmann when he moved to FC Bayern was canceled as part of the Eberl negotiations. Leipzig will receive a six-figure sum instead. TV broadcaster Sky also believes that the negotiations between the clubs have reached their goal.
The signing of Eberl would have clarified an important personnel issue for the Munich club in its management restructuring. The reorganization had become necessary after the club parted ways with CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic at the end of May last year. Kahn's position was taken over by long-serving CFO Jan-Christian Dreesen, while Salihamidzic's position initially remained vacant.
The appointment of Eberl had been a long time coming. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß had long been very keen on him. Hoeneß also emphasized last year that "we will have the personnel in place for the next six to twelve months to shape the future". Christoph Freund, who joined from RB Salzburg in September, is the Munich club's sporting director.
Leipzig parted ways with Eberl at the end of September shortly before the top match against FC Bayern. The reason, according to the RB bosses, was Eberl's lack of commitment to Leipzig. As FC Bayern's new sports director, Eberl would have to be appointed by the supervisory board. The board will meet again at the end of February.
