More than 80 independent publishers receive awards for their work. The total prize money amounts to 1.6 million euros. This is the first time that a publishing house has received special recognition for sustainability.

The publishing houses Akono (Leipzig), Mixtvision (Munich) and parasitenpresse (Cologne) have received special recognition at the German Publishing Awards 2024. Culture Minister Claudia Roth (Greens) presented the three publishers with a top prize of 50,000 euros each at the Frankfurt Book Fair, as announced by the State Ministry of Culture.

A total of 84 independent publishers were honored. 80 of them received a seal of approval worth 18,000 euros each. The publishing house kunstanstifter from Mannheim received prize money of 30,000 euros for ecologically responsible publishing work. This prize category was awarded for the first time this year. In total, the prize money for the German Publishing Award amounted to 1.6 million euros.

"Memorable in the best sense"

"Here, at the Frankfurt Book Fair, it becomes tangible that it is precisely the independent publishers who stand for the diversity of literary offerings in Germany," Roth was quoted as saying in the press release. "They publish voices from all over the world, different opinions, funny, inspiring, sad, courageous, rediscovered and, above all, memorable in the best sense of the word," said the Culture Minister.

330 entries were received for this year's German Publishing Prize. An expert jury selected the winners. The criteria included the quality of the publishing work or the innovative content of the publishing program. The prize was awarded for the sixth time by the Minister of State for Culture in cooperation with the Kurt Wolff Foundation and the German Publishers and Booksellers Association.
