Conductor Karina Canellakis from the USA makes her debut with the Staatskapelle Dresden on New Year's Eve and takes the orchestra on a musical journey to her home country.

Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin and Cole Porter: at the end of the year, the Staatskapelle is taking a thematic trip to the USA and will be conducted by American conductor Karina Canellakis for the first time. The New Year's Eve concert, which will be broadcast on ZDF on the evening of December 29, will open with Bernstein's overture from the musical "Candide" and concert suite number 1 from "West Side Story".

The fusion of jazz and symphonic music can also be heard in Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F major, performed by Kirill Gerstein. This is followed by the overture to Gershwin's "Girl Crazy" and two of his songs. There will also be works by two musicians who moved to the USA: Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner, who is considered the father of film music and also wrote the music for the classic "Gone with the Wind". Cole Porter's "Wunderbar" from "Kiss Me, Kate" concludes the program.

The soloists are Egyptian soprano Fatma Said and tenor Jonah Hoskins from the USA. Karina Canellakis is Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and has been Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra since 2021.
