Head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl says he is not thinking much about his future at Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg. "When I get up in the morning, I think about my condition because I'm not the youngest anymore," said the 57-year-old at the press conference ahead of the game against his former club RB Leipzig on Friday (20:30/DAZN).But when he then goes to work and has been in the cold water for a short time, "then I actually feel really good, and then I also have the energy to lead this team and try to be successful with this team," he continued.
Following a good first half of the season, the Austrian had previously come under criticism after three consecutive 1-0 defeats and a 1-1 draw against relegation candidates FC St. Pauli. The goal of qualifying for the European Cup is still possible six matchdays before the end of the season, but the good starting position is gone.
"Especially for the decision-makers in such situations, it is always the most important thing not to be guided by any snapshots, but simply to keep looking at the big picture of what you want to push forward here," he said.
Hasenhüttl has been at Wolfsburg since March 2024. Last season, he saved the team from relegation and turned it into a European Cup contender this season. His contract runs until June 2026.
"If the club thinks that I am getting the maximum out of this team, then they will probably want to continue with me," said Hasenhüttl. If the club is of the opinion that it is not the maximum, then "they even have the duty to say: 'Not enough, someone else has to come in'. It's as simple as that in soccer."
