Away games remain the domain of 1. FC Magdeburg: In Düsseldorf, the team from the city on the Elbe secured their seventh away win of the season, winning 5:2 (1:2) at Fortuna. Martijn Kaars (11./70.), Baris Atik (67.), Mohammed El Hankouri (87.) and Philipp Hercher (90.+4) scored for Magdeburg, Isak Johannesson (15.) and Tim Rossmann (42.) for Fortuna. The game was overshadowed by the news that a car had driven into a crowd at the Christmas market in Magdeburg.
Magdeburg coach Christian Titz introduced two new players to the starting XI in Connor Krempicki and Bryan Teixeira, and also moved Mohammed El Hankouri to the defensive wing-back position for the injured Samuel Loric (torn collateral ligament). The hosts initially did not run FCM very high, which Magdeburg exploited to make advances down the wings. Philipp Hercher's first shot was saved by Florian Kastenmeier in the Fortuna goal, but Teixeira's follow-up attempt was parried (8').
Magdeburg start strongly, Düsseldorf counterattack
Magdeburg continued to push forward and were finally rewarded: After a pin-pass, Teixeira played the ball to Kaars, who scored to take the lead (11'). However, Fortuna struck back early on: After a cross from the right, FCM lacked the allocation and Johannesson (15) scored with his head. Magdeburg's attacking momentum had fizzled out, Düsseldorf were now more dominant and Dominik Reimann had to save from Dawid Kownacki (20) and Jamil Siebert (21). The game then flattened out until Düsseldorf overplayed the Magdeburg defence far too easily and Rossmann (42) turned the game around.
After the break, the hosts took it easy, lurking on the counterattack, while FCM tried to rediscover their attacking game. However, this was a difficult task against the hosts' deep-lying chains, meaning Düsseldorf were more dangerous in this phase. A shot from Baris Atik wide of the goal after an hour was the most dangerous thing FCM produced.
Magdeburg turn the game around
After news of an incident at Magdeburg's Christmas market spread, the visiting fans stopped their support. However, FCM were rewarded for their attacking play when Kaars crossed for Atik and the creative player equalized. Shortly afterwards, Kaars scored himself to retake the lead. In the now very quiet Düsseldorf stadium - the home fans had also stopped their support - Düsseldorf's goalscorer Rossmann was sent off with a yellow-red card. El Hankouri took advantage of a counter-attack to decide the game, Philipp Hercher then set up the final score.
