From next season, the traditional group stage in the Champions League will be abolished. The managing director of RB Leipzig is looking forward to a ten percent increase in revenue.

Champions League round of 16 finalists RB Leipzig are in favor of the reform of European club competitions. "It's an exciting new format and also highly attractive commercially," said managing director Johann Plenge at the Bundesliga club's training camp in La Manga, Spain. "We are expecting a ten to twelve percent increase in revenue from the Champions League," said the 38-year-old. "The growth that comes with a new Champions League format is just crossing the finish line, and we welcome that."

From the 2024/25 season, the Champions League will be played in a new format. The group stage will be abolished; instead, there will be a league phase with a total of 36 clubs. Each club will then have four home and away matches against eight different opponents. The top eight teams in this league will qualify directly for the round of 16. For the teams ranked ninth to 24th, there will be an intermediate round with a first and second leg.
