Dynamo Dresden made amends for their 1-0 home defeat to SV Sandhausen at the start of the year. In the first third-division away game of 2024, the Saxons secured a 2-0 (1-0) win at SV Waldhof-Mannheim on Tuesday. Tom Zimmerschied had scored for Dynamo in the 45th minute following a corner kick with the involuntary help of Bentley Baxter Bahn. Lucas Cueto (62) increased the lead after a counter-attack in front of 12,512 spectators to secure a deserved victory. Dynamo thus took over the lead in the table, at least for one night.
For 45 minutes, the two teams played a match of equals. In difficult pitch conditions, the visitors were the better team in terms of play, but Mannheim defended attentively and repeatedly launched dangerous counter-attacks. However, both teams were relatively harmless in front of goal. Dresden had the better half-chances before the ball rolled into the net just before the half-time whistle. Zimmerschied had not hit the ball fully, Bentley Baxter Bahn deflected it slightly and was then credited with the own goal.
After the break, the hosts applied more pressure, while Dynamo shifted to defending their lead and relying on counter-attacks. After Dresden were denied a penalty after 60 minutes, Cueto, who came on as a substitute at the break, made it 2-0 two minutes later. Dynamo then worked very well tactically in defense, stood well staggered and only allowed a few dangerous situations.
