Regional league soccer team Chemnitzer FC pulled off a surprise against third-division side Dynamo Dresden in the Saxony Cup. The CFC won 3:1 (1:1, 1:1) after extra time at their home stadium on Gellertstraße. In front of 10,429 fans - including 3,000 from Dresden - Aljaz Casar (21st minute) gave the defending champions the lead, which Niclas Erlbeck (31st minute) equalized. In extra time, Christoph Daferner (103') made it 2-1 with an own goal, and Luis Fischer (105') scored shortly afterwards for the final score. Chemnitz's opponents for the round of 16 will be drawn on Tuesday (16:00).
In the fast-paced, entertaining match, both Dynamo and Chemnitz had good chances, which was reflected in the draw at the break. There was a brief moment of shock when Dresden's Tony Menzel collided with his team-mate Casar, who went down as a result. The goalscorer had to be substituted, bleeding profusely and with a suspected broken nose, but was at least back on the bench later on.
In the second half, CFC gained a slight advantage in terms of play. In extra time, Daferner then unfortunately deflected a cross before Fischer scored the final goal. "It's incredible, an indescribable feeling. This is what you live for as a footballer," said the 20-year-old after his first competitive goal for Chemnitz.
Dynamo with "disproportion"
Even before the match, SGD sporting director Thomas Brendel had complained in the newspaper "Bild" about a "disproportion between effort and benefit" for his team and demanded that the third-division club, currently in second place, "defend with more conviction". Dynamo have only managed one win in their last four league games.
Replacement rumors surrounding coach Thomas Stamm are also causing unrest. The 41-year-old only took over from Markus Anfang in mid-May, but has now been linked to Young Boys Bern by the Swiss media. The Champions League contenders parted ways with coach Patrick Rahmen on Tuesday after just three months due to their poor performance so far this season.
