Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone believes that "everything is positive" in the new Champions League format. Ahead of the Spanish club's first match on Thursday (21:00/DAZN) against RB Leipzig, the Argentinian said: "You can no longer play for a draw. You are forced to win. I'm convinced that the league will be more entertaining as a result." This is also due to the fact that all the teams participating in the league have strengthened, said Simeone.
He has respect for Leipzig's tactical flexibility. "They work very well and have already adopted different approaches this season," said the 54-year-old. "We know both versions: They can win the ball back quickly and counter-attack well. But they can also be tight." Simeone did not dare to predict which approach RB coach Marco Rose would choose.
Atlético have yet to concede a goal at home in the Estadio Metropolitano this season. This is partly down to new signing and European champion Robin Le Normand. But also with his partner in defense, José María Giménez. "We looked at each other and immediately had a good connection," said Giménez. "If we know what we have to do, then it will work." The Uruguayan is also hoping for a positive start. "It's up to us, we have a fantastic squad," he said.
