Playmaker Gisli Kristjansson of SC Magdeburg has been called up to Iceland's squad for the European Championship in Germany in January. The 24-year-old, who celebrated his comeback in the DHB Cup last Wednesday after suffering a shoulder injury in the Champions League semi-final in June, was nominated by national coach Snorri Steinn Gudjonsson on Tuesday. Magdeburg professionals Omar Ingi Magnusson and Janus Smarason are also in the squad.
Viggo Kristjansson from SC DHfK Leipzig was also called up for the first time. DHfK teammate Andri Runarsson, on the other hand, will make his debut in the Icelandic team, which will face Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro in preliminary round group C in Munich. The European Championship will be held in six German cities from January 10 to 28.
