The RB Leipzig women's soccer team will start the new season in the women's Bundesliga with Jonas Stephan as head coach. The 32-year-old was unveiled on Monday as the successor to the outgoing Saban Uzun, whose contract was not renewed. Stephan comes from Eintracht Braunschweig, where he coached the U19s in the Bundesliga. This is the soccer coach's first stint in the women's game.
"Jonas is a calm, composed guy and his vision of how he wants to develop the team and our players is a perfect fit for RB Leipzig," said Viola Odebrecht, Head of Women's and Girls' Football at Leipzig.
Stephan, who was part of the coaching staff at Eintracht Braunschweig between 2018 and 2020, returned to the Lower Saxony club after a two-year stint as U19 coach of Chemnitzer FC and was in charge of the youth training center until 2023, is enthusiastic about the development of the RB women. "Together, we want to take the next steps in our development, unlock the potential of our players and get the most out of the team. We will continue to move forward with courage. The RB Leipzig women have a great future ahead of them," said the new head coach.
The RB women were promoted to the Bundesliga a year ago and finished seventh one matchday before the end of the season. They collected 20 points in the second half of the season, putting them in third place. Uzun was with the Saxons for two years and has coached them in 53 games in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga as well as in the DFB Cup. RB won 32 of those games and lost 15 times.
