An inhumane advertisement in the official gazette of the Saxon town of Sebnitz has caused outrage. A local roofing company had advertised the prospect of an apprenticeship - but excluded certain people who were described using anti-Semitic, racist and discriminatory terms.
The city council distanced itself from the "advertisement with contemptuous and xenophobic content". "Reading something like this is shameful and unacceptable. We are equally dismayed and are currently trying to clarify the situation," the administration wrote on Facebook.
City administration condemns incident
The city of Sebnitz is solely responsible for the editorial section of the "Grenzblatt" - as the official gazette is called - and was not aware of the advertising section until publication, the administration stated. This is the sole responsibility of the publisher.
"We expressly and firmly distance ourselves from the expressions used in the private advertisement and the inhuman ideas on which it is based. Incitement of the people, anti-Semitism and xenophobia have no place here and are rejected in any form," said the city administration. Criminal charges have been filed against the author of the advertisement and the publisher.
The roofing company could not initially be reached for comment.
Leftists speak of incitement of the people and file criminal charges
The left-wing party has also filed criminal charges - against the company, the publisher and the city administration. "This is incitement of the people, the advertisement is clearly anti-Semitic and racist," emphasized Susanne Schaper, head of the Saxon state party. The city administration could not justify itself by saying that it only knew and was responsible for the editorial section. Advertisements in an official gazette are the responsibility of the city. "We expect the city administration to change its processes immediately and ensure that no one can place inhuman content in the paper."
