SC Magdeburg has suffered its next defeat in the Champions League and still has to worry about reaching the round of 16. The club from the city on the Elbe lost 18:22 (7:11) at bottom club HC Zagreb on Wednesday evening. Three players were Magdeburg's best scorers with just three goals each and they remain second last.
Magdeburg appeared unsettled, scored on only one of its first seven attacks and was clearly behind early on. "We have to fight for every goal now," demanded Head Coach Bennet Wiegert in his timeout (1:6/10). However, the SCM still lacked penetration after that and had a shooting percentage of just 28 percent at the break - but was only four goals behind.
The lull in the SCM's attack initially continued after the break, but Magdeburg exploited a weak spell by the home side to close the gap to two goals (11:13/39). It did not get any closer because SCM continued to miss shots diligently and let Zagreb pull away again.
