The Deutsch-Sorbisches Volkstheater in Bautzen can continue to build on a loyal audience. In 2024, 124,791 spectators attended 760 events, according to the bilingual theater. Compared to the previous year, this is a slight decrease. However, there were also 24 more performances back then - with a total of around 128,300 visitors.
Theatre optimistic for the future despite difficult situation
"We are infinitely grateful for the trust and loyalty of our audience, which enables us to continue telling stories that touch and inspire," explained Artistic Director Lutz Hillmann. Despite the difficult political and financial situation, the company is optimistic about the future.
"I would like to see political decisions at all levels that give people cause for optimism, that make them want to live and work in this country. Things have to start looking up again," emphasized Hillmann. Theater people could do a lot to achieve this if they were given the opportunity and the conditions to do so.
24 premieres in German and Sorbian in the previous year
In 2024, the theater presented 24 premieres in German and Sorbian in drama and puppet theater. The European project of minority theaters hosted guests from Ireland and Spain in September. Next March, a chapter of world literature will be staged - Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman".
