The Museum of Fine Arts is dedicating a cabinet exhibition to the Leipzig painter Bernhard Heisig (1925-2011) on the occasion of his 100th birthday. On display are well-known works by the influential artist of the Leipzig School of painting, as well as lesser-known portraits and still lifes with autobiographical connotations. According to the Leipzig museum, the show is a subjective but representative insight into the painter's visual world.
Special exhibitions on Heisig, Jaskiel and Evelyn Richter
Heisig, long-time rector of the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) in Leipzig, would have been 100 years old on March 31. The exhibition "Bernhard Heisig. Birthday Still Life with Icarus" will be shown from March 20 to June 8.
Further special exhibitions are dedicated to the painter Abraham Jaskiel (1894-1987) and the photographer Evelyn Richter (1930-2021), among others. The German-Italian artist Rosa Barba is also contributing a spatial installation on the physical perception of light and space.
Increased visitor numbers thanks to free admission to the museum
Last year, more than 160,000 guests visited the Museum of Fine Arts, said Director Stefan Weppelmann. The introduction of free admission to Leipzig's municipal museums has led to an increase of around 2,000 visitors per month. The normal permanent exhibitions can be visited free of charge, but you have to pay to visit the special exhibitions.
