The preservation of the outer wall of the former synagogue in Plauen has taken a step forward. An appeal for donations has already raised 18,253 euros, the city announced on Monday. The goal of the crowdfunding project called "Bruchstelle 1938" was 15,000 euros.
As the costs are difficult to estimate, the appeal for donations will continue as planned until July 8, said Plauen's cultural mayor Tobias Kämpf (CDU). "The more funds we have available, the better we can design this special place and build bridges - between past and present, between generations and cultures."
The synagogue in Plauen, which was consecrated in 1930, was burned down during the pogrom night of November 9-10, 1938 and was long thought to have been completely destroyed. A remnant of the wall has now been identified. It is to be renovated and saved. A creative memorial and meeting place is to be built on this site.
According to Kämpf, the preservation of the now listed building remnant will cost a total of 100,000 euros. In addition to the donated money, the rest is to be financed by state subsidies from the monument protection program.
