Saxony's libraries and archives preserve the state's memory. Preserving, maintaining and researching this written cultural heritage costs money - and some of it has to be saved from decay.

This year, the federal government and the Kulturstiftung der Länder are funding ten projects for the preservation of written cultural assets in Saxony with a total of around 134,400 euros. According to the coordination office in Berlin, the money will be used to support the restoration of historical files and an atlas with 234 18th century maps in the Bautzen City Library and Archive Network, an early modern regional chronicle in the Chemnitz City Library and historical documents in the Dresden-Meissen Diocesan Archive.

Concepts for saving endangered objects

The development of a conservation concept for the library of the Marienkirche Pirna, the development of boxes for storing large-format maps and prints at the Saxon State Library in Dresden and the conservation of historical and severely damaged "bracteate books" in the Dresden Coin Cabinet - a total of 77 volumes with silver sheet coins sewn or glued onto the book pages - are also being funded.

The Oberlausitzische Bibliothek der Wissenschaften in Görlitz is receiving financial help with the restoration of the "Le Grand Atlas" from 1663, the Sächsische Wirtschaftsarchiv Leipzig with the cleaning, mold spore removal and packaging of a company archive and the city of Zwickau with its equipment for the rescue of cultural assets.
