Saxon brewers sold slightly less beer in 2023 than in the previous year. Sales fell by 2.5 percent to 6.9 million hectoliters, according to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. This puts Saxony in line with the national trend: the thirst for beer has been declining for several years.
However, beer brewers from Saxony were able to slightly increase their share of nationwide sales. According to the statistics office, 8.2 percent of beer sold in Germany came from the Free State. In 2022, this figure was 8.0 per cent.
The industry in Saxony is characterized by medium-sized companies. Last year, 82 breweries were operated in the state. Another free state is the national leader here: Bavaria has the highest density of breweries with 622.
