Consumer prices in Saxony are rising somewhat more sharply again. Compared to the previous year, some services have become considerably more expensive.

Inflation rose slightly again in Saxony in May and exceeded the three percent mark. According to provisional figures, the annual inflation rate is 3.1 percent, as announced by the State Statistical Office in Kamenz on Wednesday. In April it was still at 2.7 percent, in March at 2.5 percent. According to the statistics, consumer prices rose by 0.1 percent compared to April.

The state office blames the moderate increase in annual inflation on higher food prices, among other things. In particular, the prices of bread rolls (3.7 percent), cold cuts (4.5 percent) and butter (16.5 percent), as well as fruit and vegetable juices (11.8 percent), cola (6.2 percent) and mineral water (2.5 percent) increased compared to the same month last year. Beer also cost an average of 4.1 percent more in the retail sector than in the same month last year.

The highest annual inflation this month was recorded in the main group "Other goods and services" (7.3 percent) - this includes insurance services for transportation (29.3 percent). By contrast, prices in the postal and telecommunications sector remained below the previous year's level overall (down 0.8 percent).
