The VW plant in Zwickau has already had to hand over four models following the wage compromise. Now the plant also has to worry about the last model.

According to a media report, the VW plant in Zwickau must fear for its future even after the compromise between Volkswagen and the works council. According to Der Spiegel, the Group is considering building at least part of the last remaining model, the electric Audi Q4 e-tron, at another location from the first half of the 2030s.

Production at Volkswagen's US plant in Chattanooga is said to be under discussion. At least the vehicles for the US market could be produced there in future, according to the report. So far, these have come from Zwickau. "We are currently examining various scenarios," said an Audi spokeswoman when asked. At the same time, she emphasized: "Zwickau will remain the production site for the Audi Q4 e-tron and Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback."

First Audi "Made in USA"

The VW sister model ID.4 is already being produced in Chattanooga. For Audi, however, the Q4 would be the first vehicle to be produced directly in the USA. Until now, Audi has mainly served the market there from its plant in Mexico.

The Audi Q4 e-tron and its estate variant, the Q4 e-tron Sportback, will be the only models still built in Zwickau from 2027. The VW models ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and the Cupra Born, which were also previously produced there, will then move to Wolfsburg and Emden. This was agreed by the company and the works council as part of the wage compromise shortly before Christmas.

In return, the employees will have job security until 2030. The Zwickau plant has around 9,500 employees.
