TSMC settles in Dresden - surrounding area wants to seize opportunities

The surrounding towns and municipalities are working on a study to overcome the challenges posed by the establishment of the Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC in Dresden. The aim is to develop residential and commercial development potential and intensify regional cooperation between Dresden and the surrounding area, as announced by the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge on Tuesday.

Development potential in the surrounding area

A temporary "Dresden Region" task force is to support the studies and prepare for institutionalization. The districts of Bautzen, Meißen and Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge as well as 21 towns and municipalities in these districts are involved in this task force. According to the announcement, Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge will contribute 10,000 euros.

"Thanks to its proximity to the state capital, our district will also have the opportunity to benefit from positive effects," said District Administrator Michael Geisler (CDU). "The relocation of suppliers could benefit existing industrial estates and provide an impetus for the infrastructural development of communities outside the area."

2,000 jobs created by TSMC relocation

TSMC announced around a year ago that it would build a semiconductor plant in Dresden by 2027. It is to be built as a joint venture with Bosch, Infineon and NXP Semiconductor under the name European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) in the Airportpark industrial estate, where Bosch already manufactures microchips. 2,000 new jobs are to be created.

With the "Silicon Saxony" network, the Free State is already Europe's largest location for microelectronics, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Every third chip produced in the EU comes from Saxony. Around 3,650 companies, including Infineon and Globalfoundries, are active in the region. By 2030, 20,000 new jobs are expected to be created by the TSMC relocation, among other things.
