The AfD in Saxony has elected the co-founder and honorary chairman of the AfD, Alexander Gauland, to sixth place on the list of candidates for the Bundestag elections. The 83-year-old received 363 yes votes at the party conference in Löbau in eastern Saxony - and thus prevailed over Edgar Naujok, who had also stood for the list position.
Gauland had actually decided not to run again, but had always included a "caveat", as he emphasized in his speech to more than 400 delegates. He wanted to give something back to his hometown of Chemnitz at the end of his political life, said the 83-year-old. The candidacy in Saxony was an offer from his hometown of Chemnitz, Gauland had previously explained.
