Several hundred people followed the call of an initiative "Leipzig against war" on Saturday and marched through the city center - for peace, against rearmament and arms deliveries to war zones. They carried banners and signs with the motif of Käthe Kollwitz' poster "Never again war", inscriptions such as "Who wants peace, does not supply weapons", the "Peace" flag in rainbow colors - or the Palestinian flag. The Leipzig police department stated that the number of participants peaked at 350 and that there were no disruptions.
"We are for an end to the war in Ukraine and a negotiated solution in Gaza as well," said Torsten Schleip from the Leipzig Peace Center. There is always new suffering and conflict from both sides. "This must finally stop, there must be diplomatic solutions." The responsible states are called upon to do so, especially Germany, which has a responsibility towards Israel, but also towards the Russian and Ukrainian people, who were decimated "in the murderous Second World War".
On Good Friday, numerous people had already demonstrated for peace at an Easter march in Chemnitz. There were no disturbances and the police reported the number of participants at 215.
