For a long time, it looked as if no goals would be scored in Dresden. But it turned out to be a cup fight in which Darmstadt came out on top.

Dynamo Dresden missed out on another surprise in the DFB Cup and were eliminated by second-division side Darmstadt 98. The third-division club from Saxony lost 2:3 (0:0, 2:2) after extra time. Aleksandar Vukotic (57) headed the visitors into the lead in front of 30,070 spectators. Substitute Jakob Lemmer (85) equalized before Tobias Kempe (90.+1) put the Lilies back in front with a penalty. Lemmer again (90.+8) took the game into extra time. Isac Lidberg (98) scored the winner.

The Lilies dominated the first half hour against an extremely defensive Dynamo side, who had eliminated second-division side Fortuna Düsseldorf in the first round, but without creating any danger. The hosts, who only made sporadic appearances in the opposition half during this period, had a good chance through Christoph Daferner (8'), who hit the outside of the net.

Dynamo became more offensive

After the 30th minute, Dynamo became more courageous and built up a 5:1 corner advantage by the break, but only had a half-chance after a sharp input from Philip Heise. Darmstadt's only chance came from Fraser Hornby just before the break. His shot from a turn was deflected onto the crossbar by Robin Meißner.

Darmstadt take the lead from a corner kick

In the second half, both teams relaxed their basic formation and played more forward. Nevertheless, the visitors took the lead unexpectedly. Following the third corner kick, Vukotic used his height to head in unstoppably. He almost scored a second goal just two minutes later, but his shot went over the bar.

Chances on both sides

Now things came to life. Schuhen (63) saved the lead with a reflex save from a Meißner header. After that, there were chances for both sides, although Darmstadt were more dangerous on the counter-attack. Lemmer finally scored for Dresden. When referee Tobia Stieler awarded a penalty for contact between Jonas Sterner and Lidberg, Kempe was on hand but Lemmer scored again with a powerful shot, which led to extra time. A counter-attacking goal from Lidberg finally decided the game.

Dynamo fans cause game to be interrupted

In the 70th minute, the game had to be interrupted for several minutes as the stadium was enveloped in thick smoke after pyrotechnics were set off in the Dresden block.
