David Raum talks about coming to terms with the quarter-final exit at the home European Championships

National player David Raum has had to digest his quarter-final exit at the European Championship on home soil for a while. "It took a bit of time, I have to say. Especially because a lot of things came up after the game," said the defender from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig just over four weeks after the 2:1 defeat against Spain after extra time.

In particular, the scene when Spain's Marc Cucurella got a hand to the ball in the penalty area, but no penalty was awarded, had caused heated discussions after the game. The Spaniards went on to win the European Championship title in Germany.

The media and social networks were "brutal, of course. No matter where you looked, you saw the scene again," reported Raum. However, it was good that the whole country and many people stood behind them. They had received many encouraging messages. Many people were still wearing the DFB jersey even though the team had been eliminated.

"That just helped, because it showed that we had achieved something after all. It was brutally bitter for us, but little by little we were happy about what we had achieved," said Raum.
