Former German national basketball coach Gordon Herbert celebrates a successful debut as the new coach of FC Bayern Munich. The defending BBL champions have no problems against Chemnitz.

The FC Bayern Munich basketball team have won their first competitive game under their new head coach and former national team coach Gordon Herbert. The defending champions beat Niners Chemnitz 73:59 (36:28) at home in the opening game of the German Basketball League (BBL).

Herbert's successor as national team coach, the Spaniard Álex Mumbrú, saw a good defensive performance from Bayern as a spectator. As a result, Chemnitz conceded more turnovers than field goals at the end of the first quarter. However, the visitors closed an 8:15 deficit to 16:16 at the end of the quarter.

Chemnitz also found it difficult to score from the floor in the second half and had only scored once from the field midway through the quarter. At the other end, Devin Booker and international Oscar da Silva made the most of their size advantage - the duo led Munich to a 36:28 halftime lead with a combined 20 points.

Booker and da Silva opened the second half with a 13:0 run in the space of three-and-a-half minutes as Bayern pulled away to a 22-point difference. Chemnitz did not give up and reduced the deficit to 13 points again, but the home side did not let anything get in its way despite a poor three-point percentage. Da Silva was the best scorer with 19 points.

The game was played on a glass floor. Bayern have installed this permanently at BMW Park this season. The lines of the pitch are displayed via LED.
