RB Leipzig want to maintain their place in the top four of the Bundesliga, regardless of any potential Champions League places. "That's our goal, it's in our hands and we want to achieve it on our own," said goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi after the 2:1 (1:0) win at 1. FC Heidenheim. The Saxons thus consolidated their position ahead of rivals Borussia Dortmund, who travel to Leipzig next weekend for a direct clash. Fifth place at the end of the season may also be enough to secure a place in the top flight.
RB are determined to win the clash with their direct rivals. "We knew that we could only play a big-point game against Dortmund if we were successful in our task here," said Gulacsi after the hard-fought win in Heidenheim on Saturday. The clash with his former club BVB is an "important game", said Leipzig coach Marco Rose. But the three points on the Ostalb were also "very, very important".
RB have picked up 19 out of a possible 21 points from their last seven games. The winning goal for the DFB Cup winners in Heidenheim was scored by top scorer Lois Openda in the 85th minute.
