The handball players of SC DHfK Leipzig were unable to halt their losing streak in the Bundesliga. The team of coach Runar Sigtryggsson lost 31:33 (16:18) to SG Flensburg-Handewitt in front of a home crowd on Thursday evening. In their sixth successive defeat, former Flensburg player Franz Semper and Staffan Peter were the best scorers for SC DHfK, who slipped to 14th place with 17:35 points. Lasse Möller stood out for the fourth-placed Flensburg team (36:16) with 13 goals.
After a scrappy opening phase, both teams produced a fast-paced exchange of blows in the first half in front of 5062 spectators. Flensburg, led by the outstanding Möller (nine goals up to the break), made the slightly more mature impression in terms of play, but Leipzig put up a strong fight and kept within touching distance until the break.
At the start of the second half, the home side made more technical mistakes, which the SG exploited to extend its lead to 23:18 in the 40th minute. However, Leipzig's goalkeeper Kristian Saeveras (17 saves in total) then stepped up his game and gave his team a noticeable boost. After a Kempa goal by Peter, SC DHfK only trailed 23:25 in the 49th minute. However, hopes of a turnaround were short-lived. With a 5:1 run to make it 30:24 (54'), the visitors ensured a preliminary decision. Leipzig did not give up, but did not manage to do more than cosmeticize the result in the hectic final spell.
