The population of the Saxon state capital of Dresden continued to grow last year. At the end of 2023, 572,240 people had their main residence in Dresden, as the city announced on Monday. This is 3067 inhabitants or 0.5 percent more than in the previous year. However, the increase was lower than from 2021 to 2022, when many Ukrainians had fled to Germany as a result of the Russian war of aggression.

The number of residents with a German passport fell from 505,777 in 2022 to 503,812. The proportion of foreigners was twelve percent, a new high. The gender distribution was very balanced. At the end of 2023, 49.8 percent of Dresdeners were male and 50.2 percent female. According to the city, 14 people were registered as "diverse" or "not specified".
