In the coming season, Leipzig Opera will be hosting the conductors of two other musical institutions in the trade fair city. Gewandhaus conductor Andris Nelsons will make his debut in the opera's orchestra pit with Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk", announced artistic director Tobias Wolff at the presentation of the 2024/25 season on Friday. In addition, Thomaskantor Andreas Reize will take over the musical direction of an opera for the first time. He will perform "Amadis, der Ritter" by Johann Christian Bach.

A total of 14 major premieres are scheduled in the opera and musical comedy next season. In ballet, the new director Rémy Fichet is facing his first season. He has developed an "emotionalizing programme" for this, the opera announced. This includes a new look at "Romeo and Juliet" as well as a choreography of one of the oldest Japanese fairy tales, "The Moon Princess".
