MSV Duisburg fans cause game to be interrupted

Enraged fans of MSV Duisburg caused a long interruption to the third division match against Erzgebirge Aue on Sunday. With the score at 2:2 (0:1) a few minutes before the end of normal time, a gate in the home curve suddenly opened and masked Duisburg supporters stormed into the interior and set off smoke bombs, which flew in the direction of the police and security forces. The police were able to force the rioters back into the block with the help of irritant gas.

The match was not resumed even after a 30-minute interruption due to the heated atmosphere. "That makes me incredibly sad. Sport should be the focus and not violence," said Duisburg coach Uwe Schubert in tears on MagentaSport.

Former Bundesliga club Duisburg had already been relegated to the fourth division before the penultimate matchday. MSV fans had already stormed the pitch the previous week during the 3-5 loss in Lübeck.
