The inflation rate in Saxony rose again in December compared to the previous month. According to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz on Thursday, it is expected to be 4.3 percent. In November, the figure was still 3.9 percent. The statisticians mainly blamed seasonal effects for the rise in consumer prices. Among other things, overnight stays were significantly more expensive in the Christmas month.

Over the year as a whole, the price increase in Saxony in 2023 has weakened slightly compared to the previous year. However, according to the statisticians, the inflation rate was still at a high level of 6.5 percent. In 2022, the annual inflation rate was 6.9 percent.

Price drivers were primarily food, which increased in price by 12.7 percent. In contrast, the impact of energy prices was no longer as great with an increase of 9 percent. In 2022, energy prices had risen by 25.3 percent. Last year, government measures such as price caps and VAT cuts had a dampening effect.
