The production of electric cars at Volkswagen in Zwickau has cracked the one million mark. As the first site in the VW Group, the car factory has only been producing fully electric vehicles since November 2019. The company announced that the millionth electric car rolled off the production line this week. This means that almost every second registered electric car from the Volkswagen Group comes from Zwickau.
Around 1.2 billion euros have been invested at the site to convert it into an all-electric car factory. However, it is also suffering from the fact that demand for the vehicles is not picking up as much as hoped. As a result, many temporary contracts have not been extended and the night shift on the two production lines has been canceled.
Hope for a new pillar in the circular economy
And there are further cuts to come: Production is to be reduced to just one line with two Audi models. Six Volkswagen, Audi and Cupra models currently roll off the production line in Zwickau. Instead, the site is being discussed for the development of a new business area in the circular economy. "This would allow us to establish a second strategic pillar and once again take on a pioneering role for the Group," said Works Council Chairman Uwe Kunstmann.
The head of VW Saxony, Danny Auerswald, praised the one million vehicles despite the many challenges of recent years as a strong performance by the workforce. At the same time, he warned: "We must make our site competitive in the coming months in order to secure future investments in the plant." The topic of the circular economy offers promising options in promising business areas.
