Despite inflation and many rainy days, the Christmas market in Leipzig is a magnet for visitors. At the end there is a present.

More than two million people will have visited Leipzig's Christmas market this year. Last year's figures will be exceeded overall, albeit with two more days and four complete weekends, as the market office announced after preliminary surveys. The final figures will be available in January. The closing day is December 23.

"Despite many a rainy day, the tense economic situation, inflation and a number of imponderables, the people of Leipzig and their guests did not let the joy of being together again, strolling and shopping, tasting and enjoying themselves be taken away," said Walter Ebert, head of the market office.

On Sunday (December 22), the penultimate day of the Christmas market, almost all the trees from the decorations can be taken home free of charge from 4 pm. According to the market office, there are several central locations for this. However, this does not apply to trees on the market, as the stalls here are still open on December 23. All trees that do not get a "second chance" during the holidays will be disposed of as organic waste.
