The composer and trumpeter Lars Seniuk has been elected as the new rector of the Dresden University of Music. Seniuk has already declared his acceptance of the election, the university announced in Dresden on Thursday. The election was based on a nomination made by a selection committee consisting of three members of the University Council and three members of the Senate.

"I have been professionally, privately and voluntarily associated with Saxony, Dresden and the University of Music for many years," said Seniuk after the election. He is very much looking forward to "leading and developing this diverse and top-class institution in the future".

Seniuk thus replaces the previous Rector, Axel Köhler, who had led the university since September 2019 and left in December last year. Negotiations are still ongoing as to when the newly elected rector can actually take up his post. Professor Claudia Schmidt-Krahmer is currently leading the university on an interim basis.

Saxony's Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU) congratulated Seniuk on his election. "The Dresden University of Music, which is rich in tradition and has over 700 students from all over the world, is known for its exceptionally broad range of study opportunities at an outstanding level." With Seniuk, the university is gaining "an experienced music teacher and seasoned, first-class musician".
